Take a tour of Town of Arequipa in Arequipa, Peru — part of the World’s Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The second largest city in Peru is Arequipa, the capital of the province with the same name. The current city was founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadors who came to the area. Many of the Arequipa’s buildings are built from sillar, an amazing building material made from volcanic rock. These vibrant red walls mark the Santa Catalina Monastery, which was built about forty years after the city’s founding. The white and cream-colored sillar buildings have given it the nickname of The White City. Because of its beauty, history, and unique architecture, Arequipa receives the third most visitors of any Peruvian city.

Take a tour of Machu Picchu in Peru — part of the World’s Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. Hi, I’m Naomi, and I’m very excited to show you the World’s Greatest Attractions. High in the Peruvian mountains, above the clouds, stands the enchanting city of Machu Picchu. It was built by the Incas in roughly 1450 AD and only rediscovered in 1911. In the interim, it was wiped out by smallpox and civil war within 100 years. Spanish conquistadors never found Machu Picchu, so the city remains comparatively in a good condition. The remarkable architecture of the city is made up of mortarless, but very closely fitted stone blocks. Because of its isolated location, it is theorized that Machu Picchu was a royal retreat. The city, which means “Old Peak”, is a scenic jewel of the Inca Empire. Thank you for watching our travel video series. See you next time.

www.fertur-travel.com The Plaza de Armas of Arequipa is the pulsing heart of a provincial city rich in history and local culture. Its inhabitants express a fierce loyalty to their city, rivaling that of any Parisian or New Yorker. Theres even a joke that Arequipeneans need a passport to visit the rest of Peru. In 1735 Bishop Cavero built a three-story high fountain topped by the image of an archangel that the people named Tuturutu. On the north side of the Plaza is the impressive, twin-towered Cathedral, founded in 1612 and largely rebuilt in the 19th century following repeated damaged from earthquakes and fire. The plaza is surrounded on its other three sides by a string of buildings linked by colonial arcades.. Beneath the archways are a range of cafes and restaurants. A short distance uphill on the way to the Santa Catalina convent youll find a broad range of arts and crafts stalls. Fertur Peru Travel.
